About Concert Piece

Concert Piece (2003) was composed for a trombonist/euphonium player friend of mine who was looking for a recital piece that would feature a solo euphonium with brass choir and timpani, but something in a less traditional style than is normally composed for a brass feature.  I composed Concert Piece as an adventurous, challenging, and sometimes cheeky answer to this idea.  The piece is not only challenging for the soloist, but presents some technical challenges to the brass choir, as well.  Many of the harmonies are created by combining intervals such as tritones and perfect fourths, a style that I was quite interested in exploring at the time, and one which renders rather interesting chords and counterpoint.

While I do not have a recording of the premiere performance, an okay MIDI rendering is available below.
